Qur’anu-l-Karim

The Transliterated Tajwidi Qur’an

A guide for non-Arabic readers to the pronunciation of the original text and to understanding some of the meanings revealed in the Glorious Qur’an.

This new translation and transliteration of the Qur’an makes it easy for the learner or non-Arabic reader to pronounce the sounds of the Words of Allah while cross-checking with the clear Arabic text. The transliteration (based on Mesa and Hart’s rules) is clear and accurate, and is found directly opposite its Arabic counterpart. The English appears ayat by ayat under the transliteration. Both the Arabic and English characters are large enough to read easily, and are marked with detailed orthography (punctuation, stops, continuity, breathing, rules of tajwid). The language is respectful yet contemporary and very understandable. Additions to or ‘bridges’ in the text, necessary for the sake of English reading, are clearly distinguished by brackets and contain no editorial comment. The volume contains extensive notes and charts on tajwid, the rules for reading Qur’an, and a large index.

The Tajwidi Qur’an is transliterated and translated by Shaykh Nooruddeen Durkee. Its English is edited by Hajja Noura Durkee, with Arabic text hand-written by Munshi Muhammad Sharif and orthography by ‘Ustadh Zafar ‘Iqbal. The English ‘translation’ (inasmuch as that is possible) is built on a compendium of the shared understanding of previous translators such as M. Yusuf Ali, M. Pickthal, M. Asad, the Bewleys, and Um Muhammad.

In 1994, Shaykh Abdullah Nooruddeen Durkee began this work while living in Alexandria, Egypt, as an aid to non-Arabic readers of the Qur’an. After it was completed in 2000, he sent it to a select group of Arabic scholars, speakers and readers as well as to a representative cross-section of Muslim readers for further review and correction. This latter stage, coupled with careful revisions of form, layout and design, took 3 more years. It was printed and bound during Ramadan 1424-2003.

Ya Siin

Many merits of this surah are mentioned in the ‘ahadith. The Prophet, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, said, “My heart desires that Surah Ya Siiin should be present in the heart of everyone in my Ummah.” “In the qur’an is a chapter that intercedes for its reader and seeks forgiveness for its listeners. This chapter is Ya Siiin.” “Ya Siiin is good for whatever purpose it is read.”

”The Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, also said, “Everything has a heart and the Heart of the Qur’an is Ya Siiin. Allah will record anyone who recites Ya Siiin as having recited the Entire Qur’an ten times.” “In the Qur’an is a chapter that intercedes for its reader and seeks forgiveness for its listeners. This chapter is Ya Siiin.” He, may Allah bless him and send him peace, also said, “Whoever reads Surah Ya Siiin solely for the pleasure of Allah, all his earlier sins are forgiven. Therefore make it a practice of reading this surah over your dead ones.” And he, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said, “Whoever reads Ya Siiin at the beginning of the day has all his needs for that day fulfilled.”

Ta Ha

According to one hadith, the Messenger, prayer and peace be upon him, said, “Allah recited Surah Ya Siiin and Surah Taa Haa one thousand years before the creation of Heaven and Earth, and on hearing this the angels said, “Blessings for the community (ummah) to whom the Qur’an will be revealed and blessings for the hearts which will bear it and blessing is for the tongues that will recite it.”

In this surah is the story of Musa, peace be upon him, in the crisis of his life when he came into his prophethood and received the Order from Allah to return to Egypt with his brother. It also describes his relations with his mother, and how he came to be brought up in the household of his arch-enemy the Pharoah and hence learned many things from Egyptian wisdom and custom that would serve his mission later in life when he and Haroon confronted Pharoah and his magicians, and when he led his people across the sea and into the desert. In another place it describes how the people of Musa were stirred up by the Samiri in their wish for a visible idol, how Musa returned to them, broke the calf, and banished its maker. In this surah also is the description of the Fall of Adam and his wife, their repentance and the promise given to them of guidance from Allah.

Maryam

Allah, through the Angel Jibril, says to Maryam in the Qur’an,”Oh Maryam, truly Allah has chosen you and made you pure and raised you above the women of all the worlds.” (Al-‘Imran 3:42) In this surah, number 19, her story and that of her son ‘Isa is more fully developed. Together with the story of Zakariyya and his son Yahya, the precursor of ‘Isa, it occupies about one-third of the whole surah and is re-echoed towards its end in ‘ayats 88 through 91. Maryam was a siddiqah, those next to the prophets in purity, understanding, and closeness to Allah. She was dedicated to Allah before birth, and raised in the temple, magnetized by every breath and action to intimacy to the Source of Divine Illumination. Her spiritual vigilance and spiritual resolve strengthened her in carrying in her own body the word of Allah, ‘Isa. She is known to us as one of the four perfect women, the queens of Paradise.

Panj Ganj – Five Gems

[al-Fath, al-Waqi’ah, al-Mulk, al-Muzamil]

It is customary in parts of the Islamic world to make collections of different Qur’anic chapters which can easily be carried with one and read in rotation after each salah, beginning with salat-l-fajr. The contents of these collections are not entirely consistent, and one will sometimes find slightly different arrangements, usually with surah Ya Sin or surah Kahf replacing surat-al-Fath.

Al-Bukhari reported on the authority of ‘Aslam the Prophet said, “Tonight there has been revelaed to me a surah which is dearer to me than whatever the sun shines upon.” Then he recited, “’inna fatahna laka fatham mubin” (Truly We have given you a manifest victory) (48:1).

Al-Bayhaqi reported on the authority of ‘ibn Mas’ud that the Prophet said, “Whoever reads surah al-Waqi’ah every night shall never be afflicted by starvation.’ Ahmad and Abu Dawud reported on the authority of Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet said, “There is in the Qur’an a surah of thirty ‘ayat which intercedes for the person until he is forgiven. This is the surah (that begins) tabaraka-l-ladhi.” (67:1)

These ahadith are direct comments that the Prophet made on three of the five gems included in this collection. Of the other two, surah Rahman describes in detail the great bounties of Allah (“Which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?”), the variety and beauty of the creation, and the fact that all of these things shall perish but the Face of our Lord, expressing the Unity within duality and diversity. Surah Muzammel, the second surah revealed, describes the extra importance of night prayer. In it the recital of Qur’an and the salat are enjoined on the people. It is hoped that this traditional collection will be useful for removing the rust which attaches itself to all of our hearts.

Jaz ‘Amma

[Suratun-Naba to Suratun-Nas (Surah 78-114)]

This is the traditional beginning for all Qur’anic studies, what everybody learns for salah, the thirtieth part of the Qur’an from surah 114 to surah 78, including most of the early Makkan surahs. Of all the Qur’an, these surahs are most cognate to the time in which we live, since these surahs came in the midst of the Jahaliyyah and emphasize knowing the presence of Allah and the ultimate end of life. Traditionally, studying these surahs allows beginners to increase the diversity of the surahs which can be used in their salat.

Al-Mufassal – The Seventh House

Large size 8 by 11”, bound with a spiral binding that allows the book to lie flat for study. Arabic, transliteration and English meanings. The large format and spiral binding make this seventh section of the Qur’an easy to study. All of the signs for tajwid, as well as the letters in both languages, are very, very clear.

It was the practice of many of the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and later of the followers, to complete the reading (tilawah) or recitation of the entire Qur’an in a week. For convenience, the text of the Qur’an was divided into seven portions of almost equal length. Each part is called a hizb (portion) of manzil (house). This seventh house includes the greatest number of surahs, and is particularly useful for the learner.

Signs from Yunus and Four Quls

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, taught his family and companions to say the last three surahs (Iklas, Falaq, Naas) every morning and night for protection from both the seen and the unseen. Added to these are the fourth surah beginning with ‘Qul’ (say), surah Kafirun, and a very beautiful passage form Surah Yunus describing the nature of Allah as the Healer, the Guide, the Merciful, the Generous (10:55-67). All these along with the Fatihah, are presented in clear Arabic, transliteration and English meanings for easy memorization.

Ayatu-l-Kursi

Abi Amama narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The most magnificent Name of Allah is sealed within the Verse of the Throne. Whoever calls by it — his prayers will surely be answered.” (Abu Dawud)

“These two [al-kursi wa-l-‘arsh] are two of the greatest doors to the Invisible World. They are themselves invisible, and intimately connected in the Invisible; the Kursi is the Hidden Door that contains the Knowledge of How, of Existence, of Quantity, of Limit, of Where, of Volition and of the Attribute of Will; it also contains the Knowledge of Words, of Movements, and of Immobility, as well as the Knowledge of the Return and of the Origin.” Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq.
